P1020519Darlene Hildebrandt, an Edmonton professional photographer, issued a new monthly challenge on her website and blog, Digital Photo Mentor. The challenge is to use only one lens for 30 days. If you use a zoom lens, the idea is to stick with one focal length. Using one lens is an opportunity to really get to know it and what it can and cannot do for your photography.

I have accepted the challenge. With my new Pentax K-3 camera, I am using a new Pentax 50mm f/1.8 lens for this period. While a lot of the photos will be for the purpose of trying different shots, I hope to have a few decent ones worthy of sharing.

  1. Good questions, Rob. It started on February 16, so 13 days ago. I think it is fair to say that I have been learning about depth of field and lighting more than anything else. In did note that I wished I had a telephoto when trying to shot a bird on a roof. The 50mm just didn’t do it, as I couldn’t get closer. Overall this is a great time for the challenge, as the lens is new and the challenge focuses me to focus on it.
