Now I can say I have done it! Last night I submitted my first conference paper, for the PLE Conference in Berlin, July 10-12, 2013. My abstract was accepted for a long paper, with a maximum of 8,000 words. At first I thought I would submit for a short paper, maximum 3,000 words, but my first supervisor suggested a long paper. Reality wise, I am not sure how I would have done it in 3,000 words. I recall being at about 9,000 with editing necessary.

The editing process was a good experience. I had varying forms of feedback from five people: one supervisor, a department advisor, a conference assigned ‘shepherd,’ and two PhD students from other universities. Credit must also go to my grammarly.com subscription for identifying grammatical errors. The encouragement was appreciated, and suggestions were incorporated. Many of my own changes helped tighten it up as well, resulting in 7,500 words. I know I could keep working on it, but the deadline arrived.

For the next week, I will prepare my presentation. As I understand, the papers will be on the website at a later time, with some selected for publication in eLearning Papers. I look forward to the conference, my presentation, and seeing how the rest of the publication process goes.
